 Ineed a good PA," says Shekhar Kapur. The celebrated filmmaker who is a very conspicuous Indian presence in Hollywood hopes to set up base in India, once again.
"I've come back because I want to push media interests here," says Shekhar who confesses to have become "very bullish about Asia. That's why I need to spend a lot of time in this continent. But I'll be shuttling between Los Angeles and here," he smiles.
Talk about Elizabeth and he gets all charged up. "The screening at the Rome Film Festival was amazing. In fact, at the premiere I was the only one present. Cate Blanchett, being pregnant, couldn't attend it and even Geoffrey Rush had to leave early.
The film got a standing ovation, and it was kind of embarrassing for me to be standing there, wishing I could just walk away," he laughs. Despite a huge contingent from Bollywood being present in Rome, its representatives couldn't be part of the premiere .
"I expected them there and was a tad disappointed . But there were 2000 others who loved the film," he informs. One of the guests he was "very happy to meet in Rome " was Kabir Bedi. "I think I became famous there because of him - when on the red carpet, Kabir hugged me and called me his brother. It's amazing how Italians continue to just adore him."
Getting back to the subject of Elizabeth, Shekhar says, "I find it incredible how people in England are addicted to history and historicals ." But making a film on a historical character is "quite dicey. For you don't know when history becomes mythology. And the two make for a heady mixture. That is where the challenge for a filmmaker like me, lies."
While Shekhar hopes the film gets a good response in India, he one day wants to make a film on two of his favourite historical figures - Buddha and Ashoka. "But there again, a concerted effort will have to be made to sift facts from fiction." He's also fascinated with the character of Rani Laxmibai. "If a film is made on her, I'll have to show her as a married woman, in bed with her husband… now, people will not like that. They don't like to see their heroes as humans but only as icons," he asserts.
Not many would know that Shekhar actually started out in showbiz, not as a filmmaker, but as an actor. "That's because nobody would give me any film to make. So, I had to earn my bread by working as an actor and a model ," he smiles.
What about getting in front of the camera for old times' sake? "Well, actually I'd be a little afraid of doing that, unless someone has that kind of confidence in me." He talks about how South filmmaker Shankar offered him a role of a villain. "I was quite excited about it, but the film, for some reason, couldn't be made," he lets on.
