NEW DELHI: It's official now. Reigning Bollywood badshah Shah Rukh Khan has emerged the UPA regime's favourite as he will be the chief guest for the opening of the 38th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 23.
The decision, announced on Wednesday by I&B ministry, amply indicates that King Khan has beaten others to a slot which has courted controversy in the past. "He was kind enough to give his consent to be there," film festival director Neelam Kapur said.
A lot of dust was kicked when Amitabh Bachchan, not on the right side of the Nehru-Gandhi family, was first invited to IFFI's 2005 edition after then Goa CM Pratap Singh Rane made personal efforts, and then his name was dropped in favour of Chiranjeevi. Next year, Big B did not figure anywhere on the guest list.
Tensions between India's two most famous families hit the nadir when Bachchan, a friend of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, got a cold shoulder at the national film awards function.
I&B minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi ignored the star's extended hand for a shake when Bachchan was on stage to receive an award for Black. Shweta and Abhishek, present at function, were assigned seats in almost the last row of the hall. IFFI organisers did not say if there was any plan to organise the Indian premiere of Rituparno Ghosh's The Last Lear,
Big B's first film in English. In case it is, Bachchan will ideally have to be invited.
Actor Mamooty is among those attending the inaugural with Ramya Krishna, Mira Jasmine and Lenin Rajendran. In the past, another IFFI slot -- that of chief guest at the closing ceremony -- has also been adorned by film celebrities. Asked about the "star" selected this time, the festival director said, "It need not be a star in your sense of the term. Celebrated filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta will be chief guest at the closing ceremony.
'4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days', a film by Cristian Mungiun of Romania, which has been awarded at Cannes festival this year, will be the opening film at Goa."
For the Indian panorama, the jury has shortlisted 21 feature and 15 non-feature films.
