Yash Chopra talks about BollywoodHe is easily one of the biggest filmmakers India has ever produced churning out hits one after another, but Yash Chopra still has a lot to offer us.

In town to receive the Zenith Asia Award at the 5th Asian Film Festival, Chopra was in a buoyant mood as he discussed the course Bollywood is taking at the moment.

“I think that our film industry has a wonderful future,” he says. He makes special mention of recent films like Fanaa, Chak De! India, Omkara, Lage Raho Munna Bhai and Rang De Basanti .

“If you notice, all these are not the stereotype ideas — there have been experimentations done and, successfully, by filmmakers,” he explains. “Some of the younger directors are very talented and you will see more good work from them,” he predicts.

Ask the filmmaker who gave us hits like Deewaar and Silsila years back about the kind of filmmaking today and the comparison rather anguishes him. “Well, by and large, there is no content in most of the films that are made today.

Another thing that disappoints me is that today’s film music has no soul,” laments Chopra. “On the brighter side though, definitely more technology and special effects are used today which is good,” he adds.

Quiz him on Madhuri Dixit’s comeback in the next Yash Raj flick, and his face lights up. “You are going to love Madhuri again just as you have loved her in the past. She is simply fabulous in the film,” says Chopra.

With Hollywood production houses now setting up operations in India, what is his take on its overall impact on the Indian film industry? “I think there will be more competition, and constructive competition is always good. I think, overall, it is going to benefit the film industry. Of course, more money will be poured in,” he feels.

The filmmaker considers himself more a director than a producer. “I am a director first,” he says. Ask him to compare Bollywood with Hollywood, and he has a problem with the use of the word Bollywood.

“Let’s call it the Indian film industry rather than Bollywood,” he says adding himself to the list of illustrious luminaries from the film industry who contest the use of the word Bollywood for the Indian film industry. And, the comparison? “Well, I think our film industry is equally talented. We make more films than Hollywood does. We have a wonderful talent pool of actors and technicians,” he says.

He dismisses the latest Bollywood releases’ off-screen shadow-boxing as media hype. “I don’t think there is any boxing. It’s the media’s creation. Diwali is always good for releases. I have released many films with good success during Diwali,” he avers.

The veteran filmmaker has a fond association with Pune. “Pune is time for nostalgia. Years back, I shot a film, Chandni Chowk, here. The city has a great theatrical and musical understanding. I love coming to the city at the first opportunity I get,” he says. “In fact, I have come here as an examiner at NFAI earlier. Pune is special to me,” Yash Chopra signs off.
