 As many as six films under his banner will hit the marquee this year, leaving filmmaker Subhash Ghai no time to breathe, leave alone give interviews.
Yet, he obliges. He turns 65 on January 24 and, following tradition, will release the music of his forthcoming film Black and White on his birthday.
The film, which reportedly deals with terrorism, stars Anil Kapoor — a regular with Ghai — along with telly actor Anurag Sinha. Says Ghai, “I have produced and directed this high concept film. It’s serious, elevating cinema. It’s more about communal harmony and patriotism than terrorism.”
His other ambitious project, Main Yuvraj, may not be as lofty in its content, but will be a complete entertainer, promises Ghai. The film stars real life couple Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif along with Zayed Khan and will see a Diwali release. Incidentally, Ghai, who had a showdown with Salman sometime ago, can’t stop gushing about his performance now. “Salman has proved again that he’s not just a good looker, but a great actor. We have finished shooting a quarter of the film. It’s a musical and a complete entertainer. Salman plays a musician and Katrina plays an NRI,” says the filmmaker.
And what of rumours that Salman has dyed his hair red for the film and has gone underground to keep his new look under wraps? “He’s coloured his hair brown, not red. Since I have to present him in a certain way, he’s opted for different looks,” reveals Ghai.
The film will be made on a budget of Rs 50 crore, which indicates that his company has probably recovered losses incurred by films like 36 China Town and Good Boy Bad Boy. “My company has earned huge profits in the last two years. Barring Good Boy Bad Boy, all the films produced by our banner have done good business. We have made an average profit of Rs 15 crore per year. We expect two out of three films to do good business,” says the filmmaker.
Ghai’s other favourite, Madhuri Dixit, recently visited his film institute to interact with students there. “She was excited to see the institute. She shared her knowledge with them,” he says. And about the script that he was reportedly writing for Mads, he says, “I haven’t written a script yet. And I’ve not informed Madhuri that I’m penning a script for her. All I have said is that I’d love to make a film with her and cast her in the right character. She’s like family. I can call her up any day and offer her the film.”
So did he watch Aaja Nachle? “I couldn’t watch it but I’ll watch it soon,” he says. |
